JackPrints is a web site set up to support a project in South Africa. In 2002 Steve Hoskins, Head of Research at UWE's Printmaking Department visited Dominic Thorburn at Rhodes University, South Africa. Dominic is presently working to improve low cost printmaking facilities in Grahams Town, South Africa. Together they designed the JackPress, a relief printing press based on a car jack. Dominic's research extends to affordable inks, paper and accessibility for artists throughout South Africa. So it was with this in mind that I began researching into the possibility of reaching out to Educational Institutions and artists who wish to experiment with relief printing in the UK.

'The first requirement for economic development in any country is an educated and, in consequence, a competent and socially and economically motivated population. Poor, unskilled, and illiterate people need food, clothing and elementary medical care. Instead, they got factories, clothing and airports that were less relevant to their everyday lives ..... This was well designed to misunderstand or ignore the requirements of economic development.'

Professor John Kenneth Galbraith speaking at 'Art meets Science and Spirituality in a Changing Economy', 1996.
