PROGRESS October 2004, E.S.B.A.M, Marseille
Technically I have moved from one extreme to another. Earlier this year, I spent much of my time in Bristol working with digital positives and stochastic screens to achieve continuous tonal prints. After the London exhibition I headed down to Marseille. Three months later I eventually started the final MA year at L'École superiére des beaux arts Marseille.
I aim to gain a thorough understanding of traditional etching techniques under the guidance of Peter Grosfield, a third generation printer from Holland. For the moment, I have returned to the expression of the mark and for the first time, I am taking the plates to the locations to create 'direct interpretations' of city spaces. |

The attitude towards the Arts in France is very different to that in the UK. Artists receive support by a State with a greater appreciation. But lethargy is certainly a contagious habit here. Marseille is one of the oldest cities in France. Located on the Mediterranean coast, it has a strong identity, a unique melting pot of immigrants and impossibly hot during the summer months. Though I could do without the pollution and dirt, the Erasmus scheme has proved to be a superb addition to university education.
